Coating Surface Conductivity Modifier Imidazolium Ionic Liquid, for UV/Solvent Coating Electrostatic Spray Improve Powder Transfer

This coating surface conductivity modifier is an imidazolium‑based ionic liquid developed for UV‑curable and solvent‑borne coating formulations. It improves the surface conductive property of wet and cured coating layers. During electrostatic spray application, it mitigates static‑related repulsion phenomena, promotes uniform powder deposition, and increases powder transfer efficiency. It reduces over‑spray loss and minimizes coating defects such as uneven film thickness, pinholes and orange pee

Product DetailsThis imidazolium ionic liquid consists of organic imidazolium cation and matched fluorine‑containing or sulfonate‑based anion. It exhibits good solubility in many organic solvents and selected UV oligomer systems. It can be introduced at the paint‑making stage by stirring into coating base materials.

After incorporation into UV‑curable or solvent‑based liquid coating, the ionic liquid disperses homogenously within the coating matrix. During curing or solvent evaporation, part of the additive migrates gently toward the coating surface to build a micro‑conductive surface network. This modified surface adjusts the overall surface conductivity of the coated substrate. When electrostatic spray is performed on top of the pre‑coated surface, the adjusted surface conductivity eliminates excessive static charge accumulation on the workpiece. It reduces electrostatic repulsion between incoming powder particles and the substrate, allowing powder particles to adhere more uniformly, hence significantly improving powder transfer efficiency. Less powder bounces away, lowering material consumption and reducing the workload for powder recovery equipment.

Formulation compatibility testing is mandatory. Some UV photoinitiators, acidic or alkaline resin binders may interact with the ionic liquid, which could lead to premature gelation, discoloration or compromised curing speed of UV coatings. For solvent‑based systems, verify solubility with solvents, pigments and other auxiliaries before formal batch production.

Although this ionic liquid features relatively good thermal stability, prolonged high‑temperature baking should be avoided. Severe thermal stress may trigger partial decomposition and cause yellowing of the finished coating film. The antistatic and conductivity‑modifying performance still shows slight humidity dependence, and conductivity decreases under extremely dry conditions. Excessive dosage will reduce coating surface gloss, impair water resistance and induce surface blooming of the final cured coating.

Recommended working dosage ranges from 0.3 wt%‑1.4 wt% calculated on total coating formulation weight. Pre‑production laboratory tests shall cover solubility, curing behaviour for UV systems, surface conductivity measurement, electrostatic powder transfer effect, coating gloss, water resistance, yellowing tendency and long‑term ageing performance.

Store imidazolium ionic liquid in tightly sealed chemical containers inside cool, dry and ventilated warehouse. Keep away from strong oxidizing agents, direct sunlight and heat sources. Reseal the container immediately after sampling to avoid moisture ingress and preserve original formulation performance.
