Product Identity

This product is a fourth-generation polypropylene clarifying agent belonging to the sorbitol acetal family. Its chemical name is bis(4-propylbenzylidene) propyl sorbitol, identified by CAS number 882073-43-0 and molecular formula C29H40O6 with a molecular weight of 484.62. It is supplied as a fine powder with a pale violet to greyish white color, which is a characteristic appearance of this generation of clarifying agents. The violet tint disappears completely during melt processing and does not affect the transparency or color of the final polypropylene article.

How It Works

During polypropylene processing, the nucleating agent disperses at the molecular level in the PP melt and self-assembles into a fibrillar network as the polymer cools. This network provides an extremely high density of nucleation sites, causing polypropylene to crystallize into much smaller and more uniform spherulites. Because these crystallites are smaller than the wavelength of visible light, light scattering is greatly reduced, resulting in significantly lower haze and higher transparency. In addition to optical improvement, the accelerated crystallization raises the heat deflection temperature, increases flexural modulus and surface hardness, and shortens molding cycle times by up to 15 percent.

The product is completely odorless and tasteless. Unlike earlier generations of sorbitol clarifiers, it does not release aldehydic odors during processing or impart any taste to packaged contents. This characteristic is critical for food packaging, beverage containers, and medical devices where sensory neutrality is mandatory.

A wide processing window is another major advantage. The agent dissolves efficiently in polypropylene at temperatures as low as 190 to 200 degree Celsius, compared with 240 to 260 degree Celsius required by conventional clarifiers. This allows processors to reduce barrel temperatures by up to 40 degree Celsius, cutting energy consumption by 10 to 15 percent while maintaining consistent clarity across a broad range of operating conditions. The lower processing temperature also reduces thermal degradation of the polymer and minimizes warpage.

Faster crystallization translates directly into productivity gains. The higher crystallization temperature reduces cooling time, enabling cycle time reductions of up to 15 percent and output increases of 5 to 10 percent in injection molding operations. Improved stiffness and heat resistance also allow downgauging of part wall thickness without sacrificing performance.

Food contact compliance is assured. The product meets FDA 21 CFR regulations for use in polypropylene homopolymers and high-propylene copolymers at addition levels up to 0.5 percent, and is suitable for contact with all food types under Conditions of Use A through H. It supports manufacturers producing food containers, bottles, microwave-safe tableware, and medical-grade products.

It is equally suitable for injection molding, sheet extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, and BOPP film production, and is also used as a modifier in PLA-based 3D printing filaments.

Recommended Dosage and Processing

The recommended addition level ranges from 0.10 to 0.50 percent by weight, depending on the application and desired clarity. For high-transparency injection molded articles such as food containers and cups, 0.20 to 0.40 percent is typically optimal. For medical and optical-grade products requiring maximum clarity, 0.30 to 0.50 percent is recommended. For general-purpose clarity and stiffness improvement in sheet and film applications, 0.10 to 0.20 percent is usually sufficient.

The powder can be dry-blended directly with polypropylene resin and other additives in a high-speed mixer before feeding into the injection molding machine or extruder. For optimal dispersion, we recommend preparing a 2 to 5 percent masterbatch first and then letdown into the base resin at the required ratio. Processing temperatures between 190 and 230 degree Celsius ensure complete dissolution and uniform distribution. The agent is compatible with common PP additives including antioxidants, light stabilizers, and stearate lubricants.

Quality and Specifications

Every batch is manufactured under ISO 9001 quality management and tested before release. Typical properties include a melting point of at least 245 degree Celsius, purity of at least 97.5 percent, moisture content below 1.0 weight percent, D97 particle size below 30 micrometers, and bulk density between 0.30 and 0.34 grams per cubic centimeter. Packaging and Logistics

The product is packed in 20 kilogram kraft paper bags with polyethylene inner liners, placed in corrugated cartons measuring 60 by 40 by 28 centimeters.
