Organophilic Bentonite (Organoclay / Organobentonite) CAS 68953-58-2, Rheology Additive and Anti-Settling Thixotrope for Coatings

Organophilic Bentonite (Organoclay / Organobentonite) is manufactured from natural sodium bentonite clay through cation exchange reaction with quaternary ammonium salts. The hydrophilic clay surface is converted to organophilic property. This functional thixotropic rheology additive is widely used within solvent‑borne coating and ink systems. It delivers anti‑sagging, anti‑settling and suspension‑stabilizing performance, optimizes coating brushing and spraying characteristics, and helps manufact

Product DetailsThis organophilic bentonite starts with high‑purity sodium‑based bentonite raw ore. Purified montmorillonite slurry undergoes ion‑exchange reaction with selected quaternary ammonium surfactants. After filtering, washing, drying, fine grinding and strict classification, the finished organoclay powder is obtained. The organic cation molecules are permanently adsorbed onto clay platelet surfaces, reversing the original hydrophilic character of bentonite.

Untreated natural bentonite can only swell within aqueous systems and cannot disperse effectively in non‑aqueous solvent‑based resins. After organic modification, the lamellar silicate platelets are able to undergo solvent‑activated delamination under proper shear force during paint production. Well‑dispersed silicate sheets build up a reversible physical network inside coating liquid. Under static storage conditions, this network increases system viscosity and suppresses sedimentation and hard caking of heavy pigments and mineral fillers. During high‑shear mixing, spraying or brushing operations, the physical network breaks down, lowering the viscosity of coating fluid to guarantee good leveling and spraying fluidity. Once external shear force disappears, the thixotropic network reconstructs rapidly to inhibit sagging on vertical substrates.

The product features fine particle‑size distribution, low moisture and consistent rheological efficiency. It does not cause obvious negative influence on coating gloss when dosed within recommended ranges. It requires suitable activation by polar dispersing agents during paint compounding to achieve optimal delamination and thixotropic performance.

Typical application fields include solvent‑based industrial anti‑corrosion coatings, marine coatings, high‑build primers, printing inks, solvent‑based varnishes, lubricating greases and adhesive systems. This grade is designed for non‑aqueous formulation systems and is not suitable for direct use in water‑borne coatings.

Packaging adopts 25 kg moisture‑proof woven bags with inner polyethylene liner. Keep packages tightly sealed during transportation and warehouse storage. Store in cool, dry indoor warehouse, avoid humid environment. Prevent powder agglomeration. Do not stack pallets excessively high to prevent bag rupture. Wear dust‑proof masks and protective gloves during powder‑handling operations.
