JSY‑RD is high‑purity synthetic layered silicate also known as synthetic hectorite, CAS No.37220‑90‑9, EC No.253‑448‑5. It belongs to trioctahedral smectite mineral family. Its crystal structure is formed by two silica tetrahedral sheets sandwiching one magnesia octahedral sheet, where partial magnesium ions are isomorphously substituted by lithium ions.
Its crystals are irregular nano‑platelets with 20‑50 nm diameter and around 1 nm thickness. Once dispersed into water, JSY‑RD hydrates and swells rapidly. Driven by charge difference between platelet edges and surfaces, particles self‑assemble into a unique “House of Cards” three‑dimensional network. This special network provides aqueous systems with excellent thickening efficiency, shear‑thinning thixotropy, long‑term suspension stability and ultra‑high optical transparency.
At 2% concentration, JSY‑RD can form colorless, transparent and highly thixotropic gel. Its performance is fully comparable with imported premium synthetic hectorite products, making it the preferred inorganic rheological additive for high‑end transparent water‑based formulations.
With refractive index of 1.52 and nano‑scale crystal dimension, JSY‑RD achieves above 99.5% light transmittance in 1% aqueous dispersion. It will not cause turbidity or whitening effect inside clear systems, perfectly suitable for high‑value transparent products such as clear varnishes, cosmetic essences and transparent gel‑type goods.
The three‑dimensional network brings remarkable thickening effect even at low addition dosage. It keeps high viscosity under static status to prevent sagging and sedimentation. When shear force applies, the network collapses quickly and viscosity drops sharply, offering formulations favorable leveling property and smooth application experience.
The spatial network structure can stably hold pigments, functional powders, microcapsules and other solid particles. It effectively restrains settlement and delamination during storage, and greatly extends shelf‑life of finished products.
It performs stably within pH 5.5‑13 range. Good compatibility exists with most anionic surfactants, non‑ionic surfactants, water‑borne resins and organic thickeners. It can be compounded with polymers like CMC and sodium alginate to create synergistic thickening effect.

Pre‑gel Method (Recommended)Slowly sprinkle JSY‑RD powder into deionized water under high‑speed stirring at 800‑1500 rpm. Suggested solid content is 2‑5%. Keep stirring for 20‑30 minutes until full dispersion. Allow hydration for more than 4 hours at room temperature, or 5‑10 minutes in 50 ℃ warm water to obtain homogeneous transparent gel. Add the pre‑gel into your formulation following production procedures.
Direct Addition MethodBefore introducing other formula components, disperse dry JSY‑RD powder into water under high‑shear condition. Add remaining raw materials sequentially after complete hydration.
Recommended DosageTypical addition level ranges from 0.1 % to 3.0 % based on total formulation weight. Exact dosage should be confirmed through lab tests according to target viscosity and thixotropy requirements.
Important NotesApply for systems within pH 5.5‑13. Do not use in strong acidic environment below pH 5. Avoid direct mixing with strong cationic components. Compound usage with organic thickeners can produce synergistic effect and lower overall additive dosage.
Packaging options include inner PE film bag with outer paper‑plastic composite bag at 10 kg net weight per bag, or fiber drum with 25 kg net weight. Custom packaging is available upon request.
